One of our goals as a custom woodworking shop is to build pieces tailored to how the client will use and interact with the finished product. In this case, the built-in was built around the fish. The client wanted a focal point on the large blank wall of the living room with the bookcase sized to accommodate a new 20 gallon fish tank. Oh, and some storage and the tv. The unit had to be integrated into the odd corner of the room next to the fireplace; we did so by burying the shelves on the left side into the corner to tie it together.
The shelf for the fish tank was set to fit the tank with its filter and lid. To provide access to the top of the tank, the shelf above the tank is removable. The rest of the shelves are fixed in place.
The base cabinets have doors on the middle three boxes while the outside boxes are open for baskets.
