The clients recently retired to Lake Arrowhead in northern Cherokee County and needed something to fill in the large voids around the fireplace, as well as creating a coat and shoe center in the garage entry.
For the living room, we designed lower cabinets to fill the space to the left of the fireplace and mimicked the cabinet on the right side’s open wall to balance it out. Above the base cabinets, three floating shelves were installed against the existing walls. The shelves are white oak finished with Rubio Monocoat’s Arabica. To tie the two sides together, the fireplace’s mantle was replaced with a large cased piece to match the shelves. We replaced the casing around the fireplace to shorten the header and raise the mantle’s top up the face. Before installation, the homeowner changed out the fireplace surround using a black marble with white veining and built a raised hearth to help define the fireplace’s placement on the floor.
The entryway from the garage had a deep alcove that needed some organization at the door. We designed and built a coat rack above a seated base. The lid of the seat opens for storage underneath. Above the coat area are cubbies for hats and gloves and other items. The unit was designed to maximize the space between the back wall and bathroom door on the right.
