The homeowners wanted to find a better use for an awkward space off the main living room. The space was intended for a staircase but without a second floor, the builders made it a shallow but very wide niche. One homeowner used the space in the opening as a work-from-home area but the two ends of the space were hard to use. Their vision of installing built-in bookcases would help organize the space and make it more intentional.
The bookcases were designed to fill both ends of the alcoves and fill the entire height, over 10’ tall. The shelves are at fixed heights per the customer’s planned uses, creating a very strong system. We were able to use the existing crown moulding to finish out the top of the bookcases and bring the existing outlets to the front of the bookcases’ bases.
